Argumentative Essay Drive Out Prejudices From The Door...
Nyasiah Mercado Dr. Hamilton English 1020 10/29/15 Prejudice ââ¬Å"Drive out prejudices through the door, and they will return through the windowâ⬠. Frederick the Great made the aforementioned statement in a letter to Voltaire. The statement essentially implies that it is futile to attempt to get rid of prejudice. One can try to eliminate it, but it will only come right back. One may ask, ââ¬Å"Could prejudices be eliminated if they were made illegal?â⬠This is the question that will be answered in this essay. I will give several reasons why I believe making prejudices illegal would not be effective in eradicating it. Firstly, prejudice is a seed planted in the heart and mind of an individual. It is not something material that the government can ban the distribution and ownership of. It is a sentiment felt by a person. To make it illegal to ââ¬Å"feelâ⬠prejudiced would be fundamentally ineffective because emotions are personal and do not necessarily have to be expressed outwardly. This means people would be able to feel prejudiced towards people and ideas, but as long as they do not make it blatantly obvious to the people around them, nobody would be able to tell. Making acts of prejudice illegal could be a possible solution. However, simply making prejudices illegal would not work for the fact that you cannot control what other people feel or how they think. Furthermore, making something illegal is not always in effective method of deterring people from it.
